About the Indigo Collection

The Indigo Collection - Goodness and Lovingkindness

Indigo changed the world

Indigo

The colour blue is an absolute favourite of mine. Growing up in The Netherlands, there was a lot of blue and white around. Learning more about Indigo blue, sparked my imagination for this second collection.

It is fascinating to see how the discovery of making dye out of the Indigo plant, made its way into many cultures. This process produced a beautiful, deep, and lasting blue which became widely available for everyone. No longer was it exclusively available to the few who could afford expensive blue.

Many cultures worked the Indigo blue colour into their traditional clothing and patterns in distinct ways. It’s use spread from India to Japan, China, France, Africa, the USA, and South America, Along with gaining the knowledge of making Indigo blue, cultures didn't just copy the way it was used elsewhere.

I like to think about the effect of the Good News in a similar way. In such, that the Gospel transforms cultures from the inside out, as opposed to imitating another culture.

Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life.’ (Psalm 23)

This verse I choose for the second collection. The word ‘follow’ can also be translated as ‘pursue’, actively searching out, and being present. I calligraphed this part of Psalm 23 on the artwork in different languages. Some pieces have the words in Hebrew and Greek and English. Other pieces have only one language; English, Dutch, Hebrew or Frisian.
